Day-by-day itinerary
Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp · 2360m → 2895m · 6 km · ~3.5 hrs
Register at the gate, then trek through lush rainforest to the "big tree" camp.
Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp · 2895m → 3600m · 9 km · ~6.5 hrs
Leave the forest and climb steadily through moorland to the edge of the Shira Plateau.
Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp · 3600m → 3900m · 8 km · ~5 hrs
An easier acclimatisation day across the volcanic Shira Plateau with views of Kibo.
Shira 2 Camp → Barranco Camp · 3900m → 3950m · 12 km · ~6.5 hrs
Climb high to Lava Tower (4,600 m) then descend to Barranco — climb high, sleep low.
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp · 3950m → 3930m · 7 km · ~4 hrs
Scramble up the Barranco Wall, then traverse to Karanga Valley.
Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp · 3930m → 4600m · 6 km · ~3 hrs
A steady climb to Barafu, the base camp for the summit push.
Barafu Camp → Mweka Camp · 4600m → 3100m · 20 km · ~13.5 hrs
Midnight summit via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then a long descent to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate · 3100m → 1800m · 8 km · ~3.5 hrs
Final descent through rainforest to the gate and transfer to Moshi.
