Trek through montane forest to the first camp.
Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp · 2895m → 3600m · 9 km · ~6.5 hrs
Climb through moorland to the Shira Plateau.
Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp · 3600m → 3900m · 7 km · ~3.5 hrs
A short acclimatisation day across the plateau.
Shira 2 Camp → Moir Camp · 3900m → 4200m · 4 km · ~6 hrs
Climb high to Lava Tower (4,600 m) before reaching the quiet Moir Camp.
Moir Camp → Buffalo Camp · 4200m → 4020m · 12 km · ~6 hrs
Begin the northern circuit, traversing the rarely-walked northern slopes.
Buffalo Camp → Pofu Camp · 4020m → 3936m · 6 km · ~5 hrs
Continue around the north of the mountain through remote moorland.
Pofu Camp → School Hut · 3936m → 4800m · 6 km · ~5 hrs
Climb to School Hut, the northern launch point for the summit.
School Hut → Mweka Camp · 4800m → 3790m · 16 km · ~13.5 hrs
Midnight summit to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then a long descent to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate · 3790m → 1800m · 10 km · ~3.5 hrs
Final descent through moorland and forest to the gate.
